What happens after you get a mastery sign for a crop in FARMVILLE?

One of my friends said that once you get a mastery sign for a crop, if you plant and harvest that crop, you get some type of reward. I'm not sure if that means more XP than you would have before, or something else. Do you know? Thanks!
